Neurological Physiotherapy
Neurological physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy focused on the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals who have conditions related to the nervous system. These conditions can affect movement, balance, coordination, sensation and overall physical function, as well as causing pain and muscle spasm. As neurological physiotherapists at The Nerve Injury Clinic, we work with patients who have various neurological disorders, such as:
- Stroke: Impairments like weakness, paralysis, and loss of coordination after a stroke.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS): A progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, causing problems with balance, mobility, and fatigue.
- Parkinson's Disease: A degenerative disorder that leads to tremors, stiffness, and difficulties with movement.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the spinal cord can result in partial or complete paralysis.
- Traumatic Brain Injury: Injuries to the brain that affect motor function, balance, and cognition.
- Cerebral Palsy: A condition caused by brain damage that affects movement and muscle coordination.
- Dystonia: a movement disorder that causes the muscles to contract. This can cause twisting motions or other movements that happen repeatedly and that aren't under the person's control.
- Peripheral Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy develops when nerves in the body's extremities, such as the hands, feet and arms, are damaged. The symptoms depend on which nerves are affected.
The primary goal of neurological physiotherapy is to improve the patient’s functional abilities and quality of life. We use a range of treatments, including hands-on manual techniques, exercises to improve strength, balance, and coordination, mobility training, and techniques to enhance motor control and sensory processing. We also focus on helping patients adapt to long-term conditions, often using assistive devices and offering guidance for home-based therapies.
Our neurological physiotherapists also use specialist Bobath techniques, myofascial release and acupuncture. Our approach embraces technology alongside hands-on treatment, using electrical muscle stimulation and assistive electric arm and leg bikes.Â

Melinda Sallaway-Royle I was recommended to see Claire Downs in July 2022 by the Neurogist Prof. Mark Roberts after I had been suffering with Peripheral Neuropathy for a while. Due to the nature of nerve pain, treament is a slow progress but with time I have felt a dramatic improvement in my nerve pain around my left ankle. I believe this is down to Claire’s specialised knowledge and expertise of how to deal with nerve pain, as my ankle was found to be very sensitive to small changes of movement. I can highly recommend The Nerve Injury Clinic to anybody suffering with nerve pain. Paul Thank goodness I found the Nerve Injury Clinic. I have a long term Cervical Spine issue and post surgery things were still going downhill. It is so much more than a Physiotherapy practice. Claire has been able to manage my situation which has allowed me to continue to do some things. She is knowledgeable, professional and personable. It's worth a chat, if you feel they may help. Dan Smith This place has been a god send for me. I didn't believe I would recover to the extent I have without them. Claire the owner has been great at understanding my issues and helping with the stimulator to get my nerve feelings back. Kelly and Katie are very different in their rehab approach but both are very affective helping me regain strength balance and movement. I couldn't recommend this place highly enough. Rob Lyons I had nerve pain in my hand for months and saw Katy, it felt better after 2 sessions following her advice Steve Jones Had shoulder problem for 6 months and now better.Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 5 reviews
